At the risk of sounding offensive, I just have to reiterate that there is supposed to be a clear separation of Church and State. However, the distinction seems to have lost its way and here we are, listening to politicians and their followers use religion as a selling point. That is precisely what they are doing ... selling themselves and using whatever they have at their disposal. I, personally, feel as though they should dispose of religious views in campaigning altogether. I am not voting for the Pope; that is not even an option available to the general public. I truly do not care if the candidate prays each night, or if his preacher becomes a bit verbally volatile.
When word on the street regarding the campaign focuses on the religious values of the candidates, I want to run away from the conversation. Hello ... We are voting for the next President of the United States. This is serious. We need someone that can be respectful and be respected in both our country and the global community. We need someone that can be strong and can react. We need someone that looks over our best interests and not simply their own (*cough* Bush family *cough*). Sure, GWB is a religious man but he's been a pretty disappointing Commander in Chief and President. I don't think even God could save his legacy.
I thought I was only annoyed by people who wanted to vote for Obama because he's Black, or Hillary because she's a woman, but that's not the case. I am annoyed that people are considering voting for their choice simply because of such superficial matters. For crying out loud public, vote for your candidate because of their political views, and their personal history, and not how they spend their Sunday mornings.
